Which logon should I use?

The Normal Logon connects to the eTAP servers in standard mode - this is the way most web sites work.
Exeptions are when you are doing bank transactions or are using a system that requires secure connections such as when you are entering passwords.

The Secure Logon connects to the eTAP servers using a secure encrypted connection, this means that information you see on the web page is 'encrypted' so that people can not see the contents if they 'intercept' the page between you and the eTAP servers.

You can also click on the large 'Logon to eTAP' icon at the top left corner, this is the same as the Normal Logon but removes some of the extra icons and bars that reduce the size of the browser windows.

If you have javascript turned off or are using a browser that does not support javascript or you are having difficulty connecting to eTAP then you should use the Normal Logon.

You can use either method, the Secure Logon may be slightly slower and have more delays before a page appears.
This is the connection to use if you believe that someone could have set up a computer at your school or ISP that is running software to intercept and capture the pages you are looking at to use the information for illicit purposes.

Please bear in mind that this does NOT protect you from 'key logging' software that you might encounter at an internet cafe or at 'insecure' locations.
It also may not protect you if the computer you are using has been compromised by spyware, a virus, or other 'key logging' software.

We are not currently aware of any deliberate attempts to gather information from schools using any of these methods.
However we are aware that some people have given their school passwords to people who should not have access to eTAP and this is the most likely cause of 'illicit' access to eTAP.
Please do not give your passwords to anyone, even if they claim to need them for 'security' reasons or they claim to be a security advisor.
